Koronadal City – July 23, 2024 –a 90 cm juvenile female reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) was turned over and rescued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XII-PENRO South Cotabato after receiving a call from the Brgy. Police Anti-Terrorists (BPATS) of Brgy. Sta. Cruz on July 23.
Upon receipt, Dr. Roy Mejorada of Conservation and Development Division (CDD) immediately assessed the python and found it to be in good health, having recently consumed a meal, described as alert, responsive, and free from any physical injuries or parasites. "We will transport the python to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center for further observation and will release it back into the wild at the earliest opportunity," stated Dr. Mejorada.
As per BPAT Angel Labadia, the snake was surrendered by two resident teenagers of Prk. Masipag named Alioquim Flores and Jeson B. Sejos, who discovered the python inside their house prompting them to seek assistance from local authorities.
PENRO Rosalinda Cortez emphasized the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation, aligning with the DENR's mandate to mobilize citizens in protecting the environment. She called on the staff experts in wildlife rescue to address such concerns promptly. "The swift action taken by the BPATS and the teenagers is commendable," Cortez added. “The office will acknowledge through awards the contributions of individuals who actively participate in these efforts.”
Under DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2019-09 entitled, “Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their Categories”, the reticulated python is considered as a threatened species. Like all pythons, it is a non-venomous constrictor. (JEATRIN V. ORO)
